For KDE you can use Superkaramba or in KDE4 you can use plasma, which is closesly tied with Superkaramba. For Gnome you can use gDesklets. For any desktop using Compiz etc. you can use Screenlets.
They all perform pretty much the same function.

Yeah, SuperKaramba.
And most monitors have the word 'monitor' in their name. I use GlassMonitor myself, but there are a dizzying number of different ones in the *Eyecandy for your KDE-Desktop - KDE-Look.org website. Can't tell an OS by it's GUI

You can also check out Conky if you should desire a text only system monitor.

Thanks guys. I doubt that I would have guessed Superkaramba as
the name of the software I wanted to install
I downloaded a clock and a basic monitor which I have tweaked to
match my "Billie Piper (Well I can dream can't I?)" Desktop. If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)

SuperKaramba comes with KDE so you might not have to install it.
Look for it under Utilities in your applications menu.oz

I had to install it from the Repo. It's amazing how little my machine
uses when it is idling.
Now to figure out how to add a GPU Monitor
It seems to run
shell commands and filter and output the results. If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)

I just run plain old gkrellm. It is a program that reads lm_sensors and other sensors in your system. Nice little program, you should check it out.
