GNU/Linux is basically a Unix-like Operating System. It is based on code that originally came from MINIX. MINIX is itself a free version of UNIX that was developed by Andrew Tanenbaum for educational purposes. Different aspects of the source code were implemented into an entirely new OS that was distributed freely to the masses.
It has since become a community driven, ongoing project with a focus on security, stabilty and optimizing the software to best match the needs of the user and the capabilities of the hardware.Jay

if i hav to diffrenciate whether Sun Solaris is a UNIX or LINUX then i would call it a UNIX and not linux ..correct me if i am wrong

There's a Wiki page here. I must admit: I didn't know that much of Solaris is now open source, though I know Centos is.
I quite fancy running a small server, but don't have the time or the drive to get it going at this point.
You would only describe an OS as a flavour of Linux if it uses the Linux kernel. No other kernel will do.
