    CompUSA Grand Re-opening

It seems Tiger Direct is reviving the CompUSA moniker. Primarily for online sales, but they're also re-opening a few brick & mortar stores. If you live in Florida (13 stores), Texas (McAllen, Plano, & El Paso only), or Guaynabo, Puerto Rico; you're one of the lucky ones. One of their grand opening specials is a 500GB Maxtor SATA HDD for US$29.99. I'm not a big fan of Maxtor, but for 30 bucks I'll jump on one. I'm headed for the closest store in a few minutes. If you're in one of the Jacksonville stores today, look for me. I'll be the one in the "Linux Rocks" t-shirt with the huge grin.

I used to work at CompUSA. Hopefully they do a better job this time around. I quit working there and was glad when I did.

I second the hope that they'll be better managed this time around. There was a time (way back when Doom was a new game) that I enjoyed CompUSA. I felt like it was dying a slow and painful death in recent years. I was relieved when all the stores closed in my area.

Well... that was an exercise in futility. Consider me educated.

Needless to say, there were no drives when I arrived. (minutes after the doors opened) Bait & switch? Meh! Who knows? Judging by the excruciatingly slow pace the two open checkouts were working at... yeah, probably. I know that that place has got to be the most depressing computer store I've ever been in. Like the waiting room in perdition. Dark... gloomy... lifeless... staffed with blank-faced drudges. The winding line of retirees anxiously clutching lcd tv's & cordless phones was the pièce de résistance.

If Tiger Direct is smart, they'll take the recognizability of the CompUSA name, exploit it in their online business; and let the brick & mortars die a quick death. That's my take. I could be wrong. But I doubt it.

Yep, that about describes my last experience at a CompUSA. Sorry you had to go through it as well.
