    Great job, Skittle!!!

I've only been seriously using Linux since about October of last year myself. Before that I was just kinda dabbling with it. Now I've got my XP install shrunk to about 5 gigs, close to the bare minimum that it needs. The only reason I haven't ditched it 100% yet is cuz I still want to stay familiar with it for work (I do customer service tech support). Other than that, I gotta say I agree with you fully on the security, lack of malware and just plain stability and speed.
And the crazy part is this: even with all the confusion and goof-ups I've had over the past few months trying to get going here, I don't think I've ever had as much fun in front of a PC screen!

    Linux Rocks!!!

You can install libifp to manage your iriver players. I've used it with the flash based players with great success. There is even a standalone application for management you can get but I prefer using Amarok or similar. Of course if you are using a H series or iHP then you don't need to use the software at all, you can just drag and drop.

Focussing on the GIMP for a minute: it's not too hard to learn. Perhaps the most confusing thing about it is the structure of its menus. I've been doing quite a lot of photo editing recently, and I still get lost when trying to scale images as there are 3 different sub-menu options containing the word 'scale'. Apart from that it can do roughly 90% of what Photoshop is capable of, and that's a lot more functionality than most people need.

In fact, I now use the GIMP at work, and my colleagues seem to agree that using a free package is cost effective.

I use GIMP every day for work, and while I appreciate it, it doesn't rival commercial Win apps. Also, I miss the large fan/consumer communities. The communities I've found for GIMP were stagnant and useful only if you needed info on an older version of the application.

That being said, for everyday work for most people, GIMP will do anything you're likely to run into.

    thanks,

    Aloof linux user #whatever.

I tested off the charts for MENSA. Unfortunately, it was off the wrong end of the chart.

First off, thanks to everyone for their congrats. I really do appreciate it.

Tom, I think you and I were on the same page because I had found those packages just briefly before you added your post. However, I can't figure out how to use it. Anyway, I am going to go start another thread for that so that this one can continue to just be a success story thread.
