    Howdy Y'All!!

I've been perusin' these forums a tad and y'all sure do sound like mighty fine folks. there. I certainly DO look forward to learnin' and sharin' with y'all (but mostly learnin' ) as I explore this new frontier of personal computin', called LINUX!

So far, I'm just startin' to figure out where, in heck's name, all these new applications and modules and such are landin' up! I've looked high 'n low .... And then, just when I think I got the "system," the next one ain't where it's supposed to be ... I mean, not even close. Well, as I said, I'm a learner.

But I gotta' assume that all the fine folks all over the planet who somehow mange to keep this LINUX thing glued together so it's actually a ... well, a THING! Well I'm thinkin' they gotta have some mighty fine senses of humor!

    In any case,
    I'm much obliged,

    P.S.
I started computing on timesharing terminals, learning COBOL, Fortran, Basic and the bright and shiny IBM PC 8088 in the early 80s. Linux is a blast! And I do need a community to help me assimilate all this.

We're here to help. Good luck on beginning with Linux.

And yes, we do have fine senses of humour.

Oh I say sir - what a great introduction!
If you had not said you were from the "extreme western portion of New Hampshire USA", it would have placed you right among "the good ole' boys" from more southern States as exemplified by Junior Johnson doing the whiskey run at night, and the passion for stock car racing. OK - I admit - I was just reading Tom Woolf's "Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test" (old book - predates "The Dukes of Hazard").

Welcome. You will find it rather good company here.

    Welcome to the forums Kenny!

Gtrax, I love Tom Wolf! That what he wrote about Junior Johnson is priceless! I've read "The Right Stuff" perhaps four times. He has an ability to put you right in the cockpit with your heart racing a hundred miles and hour!

    This is a great read:

    Howdy, Gtrax!
Thanks for your hospitality, which I'll have you know has not gone unnoticed. And that there's quite a coincidence, you just havin' read Tom's book on his adventures with "The Chief" back in '68.

1968. That there was quite a year for us over here in the states. And I'd heard tell of somethin' goin' on in France about then, too. But I know you Brits'd rather stick needles in your eyes than to engage in prolonged conversations about your southern neighbors there, so I'm gonna drop that line of thought like a rock in a pond.

Yup, I know Tom 's "Kool-Aid Test" is an "old" book (which, I suppose makes me old, too ...); and, to tell ya' the truth, I wasn't really payin' real good attention when that "Dukes of Whatever" was on the T.V. (In fact, I wasn't payin' real good attention from around 1967 til' ... Shoot! But that's a story for a whole nother day!) I would have to agree with Tom, though: old Stewart drove that rickety flat bed with a wild abandon that may not have been so wise, given the peculiar psychological states of the vehicle's passengers. (Shoot, I nevah' thought they're gonna show up that night.)

Again, thank ya for your kind welcome.

    Signed,
Ken-- (oops, maybe discretion'd be the bettah part of valor, as regards my signature, 'specially with y'all's readin' interests. We are provided with a certain sense of anonymity in these forums, now, don't we? So I'll go ahead and sign

Some of us live there! Nah, but to be honest, all that French bashing is a load of old coblers! The English enjoy having a go at the old enemy, and the French love it when they beat the English at rugby, but it's all good fun! We buried the hachet in Trafalgar!

Yo Dapper Dan. Thanks much for that link - clearly the original piece of American culture.

The French? er.. well, at short notice, I just cannot do much better than this here.

Since Kenny has clearly seen time with a weepy green (orange even!) terminal cranking FORTRAN, I think he is going to be right at home with Linux.
