We have both dogs and cats. We had the dogs for a while, and finally got two cats last Fall. We got the cats mostly because with the onset of colder weather, field mice would try and move in with us.

The dogs are good company and help protect the home. But the cats are company too and keep mice out.

When I go feed our horses, the one dog goes out with me to chase rabbits out of the yard while the other cheers him on from inside the fence. He'll never catch one, but he has a good time trying.

The cats will get all wound up and chase each other through the house or bat their toys around. They'll also meet me at the door when I get home from work at night.

I guess I'm just fond of animals.

Looks like it's pretty much even right now: 10 & 10

I have 2 dogs and 3 cats but I've gotten really close to my dogs over the last few years, so they got my vote.

While I do have a soft spot for dogs (I happen to have a Border Collie and a Doberman), I have always been a cat person. And the cats seem to know this (including the 2 twenty pounders I have at home). I've always got one of them begging for attention when I'm at home.

It's difficult. I have had both cats and dogs and I like both. But I have voted marginally for dogs because:

1) You have a closer relationship with a dog.
2) It makes you go out every day so it's better for your health.
3) You don't have to lug home bags of litter for it.
4) You can take it on holiday with you.

I currently have a small dog (a Jack Russell) who loves to be on my lap, where he curls up like a big black-and-white cat, so in a way I have the best of both worlds.

I chose cats because I prefer them over dogs, but really I don't have either. I have 4 ferrets and they are a handful. Extremely smart animals, but also extremely curious.

Dogs are much too needy and they beg for everything (such as at the dinner table). Cats just act as if they are superior but know their place.

Those are my thoughts.

You're right about loyalty though. Cats are only as loyal as their stomachs.
It might just be me then as I have always found cats to be rather lethargic in their demeanor. They always tend to have little regard for their fellow human companions. To be fair though, I have never lived with a cat.

I heard a good one...

You know how to tell who is your best friend between your wife or your dog?

Lock them both in the trunk of your car for an hour, then open the trunk and see which one is glad to see you.

HAHAHA.
I don't even want to think about how mad the wifey would be after 5 minutes in a trunk.

I like other people's dogs, but I'm afraid the reward to bother ratio is too low to justify having any pet.

BTW, all you people who claim to have cats don't understand--the cat has you.
