Of course not, Debian (and Slack for that matter) is plenty fast, they are way faster than Ubuntu, Fedora, openSuse, Mint, ...... Just was saying that Arch, a distro meant to be fast, is faster. I definitely would never put down Deb

OK - so that's it. I've compared Arch with Gentoo, and I've decided that the latter isn't worth the bother; and this afternoon I installed Yoper and I've decided to stay with Archlinux. Yoper is fast, that's true, but the difference between Yoper and Archlinux is hardly noticeable. And I'm sure that with a little tweaking Arch could be made to go even faster. Yoper's a nice little distro, but it doesn't have the feeling of quality that you get with Arch.
So, as from today, I've switched my main distro from Debian to Archlinux. I hope we'll be happy together!

Nice to hear that my thread has helped convert someone. You were hesitating over which version to try. Did you go for the 32 or 64 bit version in the end?

I played it save and picked the 32 bit version, I think it is far less buggy as to what I have witnessed in the 64 bit version. Plus the support on the net is much greater if you have trouble.
There isn't a noticeable difference in speed anyway...

I must confess I'm am an Arch convert as well (but from openSUSE). I'm running 32 bit on the desktop (it's 32-bit ) and running 64 bit and just put 32 bit on my laptop. My only complaint about the 64 bit version so far is kdemod does not work yet ... I tried a workaround but that does not work either ... it gives me chance to give fluxbox a spin

I've come to the conclusion the key thing with Gentoo is to pick the right USE flags to match your combination of hardware and software you want to install. The example combinations in the handbook never quite got what I needed :drown:

Anyway ... hope you enjoy Arch and thanks for starting this thread ... it prompted me to give Arch a try

Wow! A lot of people seem to be switching to Arch right now! Could this be the new Ubuntu of the power-user community?
