Jason Coplen, your comment isn't very constructive. "No!" Oh right...so what? You're allowed to disagree, but tell us why.

For some, I'm sure the future of linux will be found under an Arch. Can't say I've been enticed myself yet, but from what I'm reading, I could be. It would force me to tighten up my linux chops. Now if I could just get a break from my insane workload.

Since building this last box, I've really missed having a switching drive controller in my rig. Makes distro sampling so much simpler. I recently found one that works with SATA drives though, so I'll probably have a box full of drives with Arch on one of them before long.

Ubuntu is the big kid on the Linux block right now, not Arch. That doesn't mean Arch won't be, but I'm not seeing it. The big kid flip flops anyways. One year it's Red Hat, another it's Mandrake, another it's SuSE, and so on.

I haven't used Arch at all. There's no reason for me to. I use Debian and have for quite some time now. I'm not saying Debian will be the big kid either, but it's what I prefer. I've sampled different distros (SuSE, Red Hat, Mandrake, Puppy, Puddle, Slackware,Slax, and I'm forgetting some), but I keep going back to Debian.

It's all preference anyway. It's nice to see Linux fanboys, but don't get too carried away.

I can't expect you to read this thread all the way through, Jason, it's getting quite long now - but you've missed the point of it. Nobody has suggested that Arch will become the favourite Linux distro, and that includes me. But I am saying that Arch might, and I think is, shaking the power-user distros a bit. I've never said it'll become more popular than Ubuntu, that's impossible. Ubuntu is newbie-friendly and horrray for it: thanks to Ubuntu more people are using Linux as their desktop OS than ever before.
I too love Debian, and I've kept a Debian partition. I used to believe I'd never use anything else and I refused to try anything else. I too have tried tonnes of distros (Ubuntu, Mint, Suse, Mandriva, DSL, Puppy, Slackware, Fedora, Gentoo, Yoper and of course the one I always come back to, Debian). Now I've finally found one that beats Debian for its quality, speed, presentation and general pleasantness.

I know I might have missed the point, which is one reason why my post mentioned answering the thread title. I read some of it after posting, but nowhere near all of it.

If Arch is that good I'll give it a spin sometime soon. I have a spare HDD for that stuff.

yea I believe every semi-experienced linux user should at least give it a try...I was like you too, just figuring why to try arch if debian works fine ?

I give you my word once you have it properly configured, you will be amazed by it's performance and simplicity.

If you do give Arch a try, give Kdemod a whirl - it's really kickin'! I hated Kde before - so slow and Windowsy - but Kdemod changes everything. It's much lighter, faster and cleaner than normal kde.

Great! How does it run? On the subject of Kdemod, I've had some issues with it and, thanks to the official website, found the solutions.
1) It seems best to disable the "BackingStore" option in xorg.conf if you have the nvidia driver. Leaving this enabled can produces ugly traces on the desktop when you move icons around.
2) It's also a good idea not to have fam running as a backround daemon as it can make konqueror crash when you open a large directory.

I'm going to try IceWm tonight. I bet Archlinux will run like grease-lightening with it!

kdemod seems to be running well so far ... I only put it on the 64 bit system today & have only tried kmail, firefox and openoffice so far.

I doubt you will see much difference between fluxbox and icewm from a speed point of view ... but let us know how it goes.
