Well I think you've missed the boat on that one...Ubuntu is already available preinstalled to home users. For several years before that Dell shipped Red Hat and SUSE on Enterprise level equipment though that wouldn't be very visible to home users.

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150. I have been using SuSE on it since version 9.3. I have found Fedora to be troublesome with the Broadcom wireless that is usually found on Dells. In fact, with my current setup of WinXP/Fedora8/openSUSE 10.2, this is the first time that I could get the wireless to work with Fedora (b43 module). But it still locks the computer up when I am at my Linux LUG meeting, though.

With the importance of wireless on a laptop, I have to vote for openSUSE. It just works!

Does it really matter? What makes things "just work" are proper hardware drivers, which are in Dell's court to scrape up. If they can get proper drivers for the devices they put in their Linux desktops those drivers will work regardless of the distribution.

I agree with Moe. The distro doesn't matter so much as the hardware and drivers support. So long as Dell gets that lined up properly, everything would work just fine right out of the box.

    I voted other because I don't care. I have never bought a
PC and not reformatted and reinstalled from scratch.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

being one that has bought a Dell PC preloaded with Ubuntu, I like the choice. The main point is that it just work with the hardware. Dell has done a supurb job getting customers what they wanted no sense in objecting to the choice. Also Ubuntu was chosen for one reason being that its a mainstream distro that has a big community following which lends to support being better.
