Dread the thought of going to Vista, and want to avoid at all costs. Home machine on fairly light duties. Use Macs at work in prepress at a printery. Am no command line guru, but intend to master the basics ASAP. Have started buying "Linux User" mag here in Australia to try and get my mind around things. Just turned 60, so may take a little longer than average!
Cheers

Welcome to the forums frailer
Ubuntu is a good choice for a new user. Disk partitioning is not that big a deal ... when you get the Ubuntu live CD have a look at the partition editor gparted - its an easy to use GUI.
You will find plenty of online resources including the Ubuntu website which has lots of useful information. See you around the forums

No, you're just the right age for Linux. We senior citizens are used to the idea that you have to learn something before you can do it. We proceed cautiously, doing simple things first, then more complex ones. We don't do anything unless we're sure we know what we're doing. We always read the manual first. And if something goes wrong, we know how to study the problem logically and do little experiments to find out where exactly it broke.
Young people who have grown up with Windows just want to be spoonfed. They usually hate Linux. You sound like the sort of person who could quickly grow to love it."I'm just a little old lady; don't try to dazzle me with jargon!"

Welcome to the forums, age is no factor imho...i'm 17 years old and been using debian lenny for about 2 years now. Reason for that is mainly the suckage factor of windows and the "geek" factor linux has..linux brings you closer to your computer and your hardware, I agree this scares a lot of people off for some reason o_O

Thanks for the [extra] welcomes. Quick question. I've heard a comment that Linux is fussy about hardware. I have my son's hand-me-down P1.7/512/8o Gb HD. Anyone venture an opinion on whether I might anticipate troubles running ubuntu 8.04?
Thanks

As you can see from this page your system meets these requirements. We need details of graphics card etc to answer on hardware problems.
I'd wait and see what happens when you try the live CD and track down solutions to specific problems you have. Most hardware issues can be resolved ... but if you are unable to get the live CD to work there is an alternate CD to try (which you download).
