    Exclamation Vista shutdowning.....

I just want to share an vista expericence with you.
I came across Windows vista Enterprise ...

I don't see much difference (except GUI - they changed icons & did some stuff) from XP.
Then i decided to take note of shutdown timing of vista...
Guess...It took just around 1.30 minutes shutdown
    Really fast

    It's System config:
    CPU:Intel core 2 Duo 2.20GHz
    RAM:2GB

    Haha!

This was the first thing I complained about when I saw my brother's comp running this MBR virus. Glad to know I'm not the only one who noticed :P

I saw a vista system with similar specs take 15 minutes to boot... I just gave the guy an Ubuntu disk.

    That's just briljant
I can remember my girlfriend's laptop (Vista Home Basic) with waaaaay better system specs than my desktop pc loading about 6-8 times slower.

When I did ctrl+alt+delete and when it finally popped up after 3-4 secs I could see the cpu-usage without even TOUCHING the laptop was about 40-60 %..

My CPU uses less than 1% doing absolutely nothing...

Vista cpu usuage really depends on the way you configure it.. same as linux, if you have a bunch of crap starting up contastantly in linux it will also take a while to start.. although there is one thing that really bugs me with windows, is the infernal, get to desktop and everything is still damn loading! I kinda got used to linux, see my desktop and off it goes ready to be used...

Anywho i run both vista ultimate x64 and fedora 9 x64

Granted linux is faster.. and yes it boots much quicker and yes its my prefered..

But windows is good for...... um ...... eh...... well its good for when applications don't work on linux!

I've had vista installed since it went RTM and it's still running pretty good down on 10% CPU doing nothing...

However linux is using: 12%, playing music and firefox with loads of tabs and messenger.. so um yeah i guess linux kinda outbeats windows >_> lol.

PS: sorry about spelling or grammer, seems at the moment my spell checker isn't checking in english LOL

In the interest of fairness, I've been rather annoyed at how long Ubuntu 8.04 takes to shut down on my laptop. I've never actually clocked it, but it's noticeably longer than any other OS I've tried recently.

Out of curiousity, how many things does your operating system have to shut down on ubuntu? or do you not keep track? Although i've often found that it can be just 1 thing causing it to be slow, such as a process that just will not shut down, i had that alot on FC7... but then I got fed up and started tweaking lol.

I'm not sure. I agree that it's probably one stray process that's holding everything else up. That's happened before.

Remove quiet and splash from kernel line in menu.lst file and check where Ubuntu taking time during shutdown.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

It doesn't shutdown mine. I just keep having to use the console and do sudo shutdown -h now
