I'm new here!
Hello!

I'm lokiliya. Just got Ubuntu installed few days ago and not yet familiar with it. I've been using Windows as my OS since I first touched pc, so linux is very new to me. I just learned to install vlc to my pc by this command "sudo apt-get install vlc". After I hit enter, the pc just did everything by itself without asking in what directory I want to install this application like in Windows. So in where are applications installed? Cant's I choose whatever directory I want?
I really appreciate if anyone can help me to answer this question. Thank you in advance.

VLC should show up in your Applications menu under "Sound & Video." If not, you can launch it by hitting ALT+F2 and typing vlc. You can also add it to your Sound & Video menu yourself, but that's a little more involved.

Installation is one of the strangest things when moving from
Windows to Linux. When installing from the repositories, the
software will usually be installed in /usr/bin or /usr/share.
This is a global installation directory and the software will be
available to everyone.
You can see where things have been installed by opening
Synaptic and searching for vlc and then right click and
select properties. If we hit that bullseye, the rest of the dominoes will fall like a house of cards. Checkmate! (Zapp Brannigan)

Thank you, techieMoe and elija. I can run vlc and know where the installed application store in now. But when I open my file system, there're many unfamiliar folder, like \home, \opt, \proc, \sbin.... not sure what are they for. I'll try to find out more about this. Hope you guys will help me when I have other problem. Thank you.
