LFS - time to build an OS
BLFS - why stop at an OS
SuperGrub - so I can get the PC to boot after I break it!
an offline encyclopedia - anything except Encarta
Electronic version of Perrys chemical engineers handbook - how else would I build the fridge to cool the beer?
    C64 emulator + a couple of games
freemind - I like mind mapping ideas (although a pencil & paper would be better)
Wolfenstein - version you can set up your own levels ... and change the characters to whoever put me on the island!

... fingal's first answer is probably the best

... bigtomrodney would need something to generate these ...

Assuming the small desert island doesn't have a connection, I'd take a machine with me with an 'antenna-in' port. I may not be able to send with it, but at least I might be able to build a radio receiver.

On the deep space monitoring station, I assume some form of link to Earth is present. That may be usable to get on the Internet.
I'd need some tools to map the onboard network on the space station as it is bound to be filled with all kinds of advanced technology; sensors, servers, redundant servers, terminals (most deep space monitoring stations are equipped with touch screen terminals easily accessible in the hallways). Assuming I have a user account on the stations board computer, I think I might be able to ssh into the machine and run remote commands on it from my lappy. Would the space station have wifi by any chance? I think I'll be spending some time searching sensor logs, so I'll google some apps to automate this before I leave the Earth. I also think I'll bring a Backtrack lifeCD.

You know, I wouldn't actually be scared in the deep space monitoring station, as long as I have root access to it's board computer.

In the arctic, all I need is a gps reciever. And a hoover craft.
(A hoovercraft with unlimited fuel... how cool is that?)
Can't tell an OS by it's GUI
