Yeah it looks like that. The new Apple firmware locks out non-apple stuff. They want to make it so that to get full use out of your IPod you are forced to buy their products and use their software.
I checked the Apple Store here and its a whopping $3 cheaper. A light on the wallet $50.
I've tried several different cables and they all aren't recognized. When I go to the video and tell the iPod to play to TV, it sits and waits for the cable forever. None of those others have that special Apple chip. This only effects the new 6th gen iPod classic and the iPhone. All the others either work with them or there is some sort of work around. I was kinda hoping someone knew how to hack the damn thing so it will do what I tell it to do.
O well.
Fortunately, I can still load the stupid thing with amaroK.
@ thehemi,
I don't support Apple usually. It's just I got the thing for X-mas and I figured why buy another media player when I already have one? It's just I haven't had the want/need to play videos from it on my TV.Last edited by Drunk_Mexican; 06-03-2008 at 06:16 PM. Reason: typos

Really? Your 6th gen classic? Did you have to modify anything, or do you use just straight Amarok? For some reason I haven't been able to get it to work.
On the price gouging topic... I don't use Macs but my sister is in love with them. She asked for my help installing an app on her new Macbook, and I brought it over as a compressed file (.sit) I found online. The amazing thing was that her machine, which came with OS X, did not come bundled with an archive manager. No, they want you to pay an additional $50 for Stuffit. I mean, YIKES.
She paid $1300 for this thing. Its specs are comparable to my Toshiba laptop, except for the screen. I have a 17", hers is a 13". And I paid $650 for mine.
I used to have a warm place in my heart for Apple products because I used them so much in school, but I'm sad to say that's changing.

Yes I use straight amaroK. It works with Ubuntu, Kubuntu, and Xubuntu for sure I know that, i dont know if it works as easily on other distros. It will auto-mount when you plug it in andto see where it is mounted. When you go into amaroK to configure select apple/ipod device, give it the mount point you found in terminal. Then just drag and drop the files you want to the left side of amaroK and hit transfer when you are ready. its actually easier then iTunes no BS.Code:mount
Transfering videos takes a few extra steps because of the apple firmware but amaroK will load them correctly once you format the mp4 right.

I forgot to mention though that if your iPod is formatted with iTunes for windows or mac it wont work with amaroK like that. If you want it to work in Linux easily then you need to back up all your files.
When you plug it in you need to open the iPod. Right click on it and get the folder open. select one file and ctrl-a. Delete.
this will delete everything on your iPod. (including that apple firmware that prevents 3rd party apps from loading it.)
Then unmount and remount the Ipod. (disconnect and reconnect)
When you disconnect the iPod it will return to factory settings. you should see the apple logo and then it should ask you to select your language. This is good because that means its done correctly.
After that you can use amaroK like I said above to load your iPod.

That's it, that did it! Amarok won't be my media player, but I suddenly love it.
This is awesome. My XP box just lost one big reason for remaining an XP box.
Thank you very much for your help!

Price Gouging Is A Sacred Path For Apple
Asking Apple not to price gouge is like asking a fundamentalist to ignore a scripture. It just is not within their holy way.
Even so, I have often written them flames about their greed. I'm still an Apple freak, but lately I keep a PC in the house just to have one foot on planet Earth.
My rule is: Never use any Apple Product that is less than three years old. So I combine the blatant materialism of Mac with a kind of Linux vow of poverty. My rule is more fleshed out this way: Wait until new versions of the software or hardware are still selling years later. By then it will be really cheap, but still run better than PC stuff. In some cases I observe a five-year, or even seven year, austerity lag.
