hi there!

hi there linux lovers,
iv just bought myself a new eee pc, 4gig, and find myself ushered into the world of linux.
im not much of a computer expert but i've picked up a bit of the history and ethos of linux over the years and so far i approve!! I also like anything that gives microsoft a poke in the eye.
I am an english homeopath, currently working/travelling in india. i bought the eee so i could have a homeopathic library that weighted less than a kilo, but iv found the programs i want to install are windows compatible only.
iv bin told to download Wine, but i cant figure out which version of linux im running and the asus website hasn't been too helpful so far.
im sure there is something pretty obvious i should be doing, but can't figure it out yet.
anybody got any suggstions? i figure this must be quite a common problem.
look forward to hearing from you,
danny

Welcome aboard!

I don't know much about running Wine on the eee, although I do have good hopes for you. The Linux distro you probably have on the eee is Xandros.

But whether your MS apps will work is questionable. Some do, some don't. There is a bit of luck involved. Which apps are we talking about? There are comprehensive lists of Linux alternatives for Windows applications, and if it is a database you depend on for your job, then maybe all you need is a different (native GNU/Linux) frontend. But I dunno... I'm just guessing

Of course we are not about poking Redmond in the eye. That's just an undocumented bonus

Many of us run Linux because we feel it's better than any other availale operating system. How 'better' is quantified depends on the discretion and humour of the individual. <=Did I write that? *phew*
