If it's a linux distribution you want, you can't go wrong with Ubuntu, it's the most popular and very user friendly.

You can use Wine, Cedega or Crossover to run Windows games and will have varied success with that. To be honest though if gaming is your primary concern the best way to run Windows games is on Windows. If you want to play with Linux on the side you can dual boot, keeping Windows installed.

There are plenty of games available for Linux and more and more commercial ones - with particular reference to ID games. I'm quite partial to Enemy Territory:Quake Wars myself. Other games like World Of Warcraft reportedly work quite well with Wine.

    Welcome to the forums firstandlast

If you have downloaded Ubuntu then make sure you select burn image to CD ... this may help. I'd do a dual boot to start with, or you may even want to try the Wubi install.

    Enjoy your Ubuntu

There are also a lot of brilliant native linux games, look up "linux games" on a search engine and you'll get a plethora. I tend to like List Of Free First Person Shooters - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia myself.
