    Dell Ubuntu computers - still with Gutsy

    I've been thinking of picking up one of these. I was surprised they still have Gutsy on them. I really think they should update to Hardy, as it's LTS, and has a much better kernel and other tweaks. My main issue would be updating to Hardy, then losing the DVD playback...

    I've been thinking of picking one up, but not to use with Ubuntu as I plan to install a different distro. As for shipping Hardy, DELL probably needs to do a lot of testing and patching before Hardy works solidly on their hardware before shipping it with Hardy preinstalled.

    I'd agree, testing is the big factor. I'd say it's on the way. On the other hand it's only a matter of choosing upgrade when you boot...upgrading only becomes a problem when you are using unreliable 3rd party repositories.

    I'm sure they will do this eventually. I seem to remember reading about it recently, as a matter of fact. I just can't remember where.
