Hi
I am actually quite new to computing. (I'm not counting the 8086 that was given to me with a big box of parts.) About 15 months ago I got a p1 and was introduced to torrents and, shall we say, "aftermarket" programs. I now have a p3 with 512 ram and 30 gb hd. A 500 gb external allows me to go more than a couple of days without having to make space.
A year ago I was having to reformat and reinstall almost weekly. I've now been 5 months with the same o/s.
As my activities have been centered around uploading and downloading media products, I am no stranger to having my security breached. That is what brings me to linux. I have developed an interest in network security. From what I have read, UBUNTU or debian seem to be a good place to start learning to use linux.
I installed ubuntu on a spare 10 gb hd for now. I intend to switch hd's back and forth for now. Given the difficulties getting wireless adapters online, I think I will just wait for 2 weeks until I get my wired connection.
In the meantime, Is there any reason I can't download programs, codecs or whatever to my external hd using my other o/s, then come back in ubuntu, install it, then use it?
I am sure I will need a lot of direction at first. I want to learn enough to be able to find my own answers. Maybe even make up my own answers eventually.
I promise to keep my posts more concise and to the point from now on. Looking forward to a long stay here.

Getting there
Looking around the forum I came across a post on compiz. Downloaded it to my external. After work tomorrow I will change hd's and give it a try.
Really looking forward to making something happen,

Welcome to Linuxforums, Chris.
While you're perusing the boards, have a couple of these:

I see no reason why you couldn't store downloads on your external and switch back & forth between OS'es. I did the same thing, vis-a-vis a switching drive controller, last year. You may need to add NTFS-3g in order to read the windows partition though. Just depends... some distros add it by default, and some don't.
