Obligatory introduction thread.

Hey folks. I installed ubuntu 8.04 on two machines last night. I intend to toy around with them and teach myself a bit of programming. I have a history as a network administrator in the military, but I dealt with Windows NT, and a little bit of HP-UX unix.

I'm getting comfortable with the cli, as it's not much different from the unix box I managed on the boat. Wireless is a bear on the laptop though (BCM4306).

I look forward to interacting with and learning from you folks.

Broadcom chips are always a bit more work. Glad to hear you're getting acclimated though. Welcome.

Welcome dude! Don't let any trouble that card gives you wear you down. There's plenty of good stuff just waiting for you.

You'll be needing these.

Update: if anyone is interested, I wound up putting openSuse on the laptop as ubuntu would run for about ten minutes before bogging down. I'm thinking memory leak, but I didn't want to go hunting it down in an unfamiliar OS.

BCM4306 is working now, and Compiz-fusion is beautiful. Now that it seems to be up and stable, it's on to programming I suppose.

I've never run into this kind of problem in Ubuntu, and I've tried several versions on several PCs throughout the years. My guess would be something was misconfigured. Could you be more specific about what's "bogging down"?

Glad to hear you got it all working. Enjoy.

Ok, I'll elaborate on the problem I was having, because now it's appearing in openSuse too. But, I think I'll do it over in the Linux Applications forum, as that would seem more appropriate. I haven't got to know you guys yet, but I've been around some forums where folks were quite anal retentive about staying on topic, within the confines of the forum in which you're posting.

Link to new thread here.

This is the lounge - what's on topic

But if you have a problem it is better to post in the relavent forum. You'll probably get better help
