I need to go online without being cut of for some unknown reason like win2000 and win200xp is doing now (not win 98 that worked fine) I take it that it would be possible for a computer illiterate like me to go online with linux. I read through some more posts and it seems I can have both, Linux for the internet and windows for games.

Hi ericat,

Absolutely it'd be possible. I suggest you start with a Live CD of a simple, newbie-friendly distribution (maybe Ubuntu, Linux Mint or PC Linux). Burn the CD as an iso, define the boot priorities in BIOS to start looking for the OS from the CD drive rather than the hard disk, and you're away. Note, and this is a brand new development, you can now install Ubuntu Linux with Wubi. Download Wubi onto your Windows desktop, double click the icon in the traditional way and follow the instructions! It's the exact same procedure as installing anything else in Windows. Wubi will give you a good idea of what Linux is like, but the performance it probably not as good as a "genuine" install. This is because Linux needs a certain type of format - but the advantage of Wubi is that it gives you a very safe way to try, and if you decide you don't want to continue your Linux experience, you can very easily uninstall it.

dont discount the fact that there might be something else involved in internet connectivity problems. when i was gaming i would get disconnected a few times in an evening that had nothing to do with the os. my isp would just drop connection for a minute and i would reconnect.

Indeed. I don't know how you connect to the internet, but the problem may lie in you modem, router, cat-5 cable, or a number of other things. Have you troubleshooted this problem thoroughly?
