Angry Tired of all DEs!!!! Bother!

    Hi all,

Which DE is beautiful as well as fast? I recently became tired of GNOME's monotony. I had FVWM Crystal, Fluxbox (and all boxes), XFCE, IceWM but none is beautiful. KDE is good but slow. I used XP for the last days and the Vista Inspirat bricopack was COOL. What to do in such case?

KDE4 has been running faster than Gnome, or KDE 3.5.x for me.

KDE4.1 beta 2 is supposed to come out next week unless plans have changed, so you could try that and see if it's any more stable than it has been. If it's more stable, maybe it will be faster, too.

Hrm, it's always a matter of taste I guess, for me fluxbox is good enough, but then again I like simplicity and speed...

I am falling in love with Icewm. But it is interesting to make it pretty.
Maybe if I had a single gram of design talent somewhere in my body

If you don't like the conventional wm paradigm try something different like xmonad. Then you don't have to worry about the look because it hasn't any.

In the past, I've used Fluxbox. I disagree very strongly that it isn't pretty - it can be stunning if you know how to make it so. Right now I'm using Kdemod. This is described as "Kde on steroids" and it is: it's much faster than standard Kde and, in my opinion, prettier too. However, I think it only properly works with Archlinux (although I have heard of Ubuntu users installing it - with what success I don't know.)
Another possibility is Enlightenment - especially E17. It isn't as fast as Fluxbox or IceWm - but it's a hell of a lot faster than standard Kde. Here's a screenshot:

And here's a link I just found which deals with this subject (it's where I got the image from).

This whole discussion, and specially the bit about "beauty" is completely pointless, it's like arguing on Madonna vs. Jolie vs. Leonardo Dicaprio Each one has his/her preferences.

In which regards desktops, just like in life, beauty is very subjective, aspect is changeable, the tastes are futile and mutable, and no one likes the aspect of his/her desktop on the morning, until it takes a bath and makes up

Nice suggestions all. Beauty isn't any physical quantity. If it was, I'd rank KDE as 9 x 10^100000 b (My own unit for beauty) and all others 1 x 10 ^ -100000 b.

But after all, beauty in terms of Linux is important if you want others to switch to it too. What do I have to do with tremendous speed and ugly interface that tells me to go away at once? I mean, GNOME is best, good balance between friendliness and speed. But its 6 months with me on the same either Mac4Lin theme or Hardy Theme when my eyeballs complain too much.

All of your suggestions I have tried in past. However, I hadn't heard of KDEmod and Ratpoison. Ratpoison is uglier. BUt thanks for introducing me. I am gving Enlightenment a try or I'll do Blackbox.

DE's either have to be very beautiful and dumb or very ugly and clever.
