Angry [SOLVED] Thoroughly pissed off with sourceforge

OK, they accepted my barbarella project for which I'm truly grateful. But what am I supposed to do now?

I've spent the whole afternoon going round and round and round their site, ploughing through endless confusing documentation, looking for a simple step-by-step guide for total novices on how to make a source tarball available for other people to download and do you think I could find one? Nope! They just assume you know how to do that.

I did actually manage to upload the tarball to their shell server using scp, but I have no idea what will happen to it there. I suspect from what I've read that this particular facility is designed for web pages, not source code.

Please, give us a hand, someone. Help me help the community.

Hi Hazel...glad you pick barbarella, that put a smile on my face

I haven't done it before but I have always been curious how it works. Do you have a link to the documentation I can have a look at? Maybe between our two heads we can figure it out.

I tried using Sourceforge for my text-based RPG project and found it absolutely impossible to figure out. Their processes made no sense to me and I ended up totally screwing up my project and giving up in disgust. Interestingly, the process for getting your project removed from Sourceforge is significantly more difficult than getting it approved.

But I don't mean to bash Sourceforge. There are obviously a lot of people who get it, and do well with it. I simply wanted to say I shared your frustrations.

Hazel, have you considered using Google Code instead?

    Google Code

I don't know that either is better than the other, but if one works better for you, then that might be a good enough reason to change.

    Best of luck with it.

Hi hazel I completely agree with you and others ...
I came across the same feeling ,
From your projects home page try the following...

    Admin --> File Releases

Scroll down - you will see something like this :

    New package name:

    Enter you project name there

    And click on
    "Create this package"

[say i given package name as 'test' ]

Now it will display a message "Added Package"

    sCROLL DOWN under "releases"

[Add Release] [Edit Releases] test Active Update

    Now click in Add Release

Enter New Release Name : 'TestR'

Make sure the download contions correct package name.

click on 'create this release' button

    Now comes the final page

    Step 1: Edit Existing Release

Fill text box /dorp down with appropriate values

    After step1 : press
    Submit/REfresh Button.

"Data SAved" message will be displayed.

    In ste2:
you need to upload project file 'test.zip'
[looks like now the disaabled ftp upload ....that how i used to upload ....anyway you said you already
upload the file --then no problem]

After uploading file , your upload file will come here (if not refresh the page)
    Choose you project file (test.zip)
    and

click on "Add files and/or Refresh view"
    Now Then

Then Step 3:--give version/file type and press update

    Step 4 :skip this

    Now the process is completed.

You can get back to your homepage

Click on the download link and check whether you file is correctly uploaded.
If you don't want follow this procedure
as ozar said you google code it's very simple .....

    All the best

ps: I learned about this in tough way...from net cafes and office hours (as i don't have net connection)...
even taken print outs about how to upload and used to read it at home...
I think sourceforge needs to look into this issue.

You're a life saver! That's exactly the kind of information I wanted. I have uploaded my tarball following your instructions and it was easy. I have also discovered that all the really useful guides on this site are under the admin menu (which is hardly where any normal person would expect to find documentation).

Perhaps we shouldn't be knocking sourceforge. It is a fantastically useful site in terms of the services it provides; they just need a complete website redesign.

ps I just had an idea: maybe I could download those useful pages and reformat them into a step-by-step guide for novices to using sourceforge.

And also add you project in freshmeat.net site too. (which will feed your project info to other sides all the world .....)

    All the best barbarella
