Saw your join-note and trouble with bars. I downloaded 8.10 on Oct 18 worked fine except s-l-o-w internet. Updated a few days ago and it's as fast as the dark side internet connection. I am using Linlsys wireless. Oh, and I loaded an earlier Version 8.10 alpha and got the same result (bars).

New Newbie
Hi Everyone - Just joined. I'm in Alicante in Sunny Spain. Brand new to Linux (been using windoze a long, long time - guess they'll get it sorted one day...).
I've just installed Puppy Linux on an old PC - messed up straight away, so have lots of questions for you guys.... Wanted to put Ubuntu or Xubuntu on it but it just ain't got it under the hood (400Mhz, 256 kb). Got it working but I'm growing old waiting for it to boot. Figured I could learn a lot from the puppy anyway.
Haven't seen anything in the Forum about Puppy - joined the puppy forum but don't seem to get any replies to my (stupid) questions - do you guys get involved with puppy? - or am I barking up the wrong tree??.... maybe another distro would be better?
Anyway, very much a "newbie", so I will be hanging on every word I read here.
Originally a Radio Comm's Eng' but doing other things these days. Moved here from England 10 years or so ago - the easy life (who am I kidding...).

Let me give you a warm welcome to the beautiful world of GNU/Linux and the forums!!!
Maybe you can try Debian web install and Fluxbox. My experience is that it's very light weight, but works fine.(you might want to install some applications such as synaptic, a graphical software installer, as well)

Thanks for the welcome - Love the forum - truly amazing! The amount of info' on Linux, both here and on the web generally is simply incredible. One of the problems for a "newbie" like myself, is the many different distro's and the huge amount of stuff which needs to be learnt - having been so used to "windows" for so long, linux seems to be a whole new world, with new names, new acronyms - Indeed, a whole new approach. Wonderful and refreshing but daunting at the same time. It's been about 20 years since I worked at the command line (dos) and I'm still having trouble losing the "windows/GUI" (HMI) approach.
Made a big mistake by downloading the ISO for Puppy Linux and burning to disk using a win' xp machine (company laptop) which has "safeboot" installed (encrypts the hd) - I had problems with puppy crashing a lot (PC locked up and the screen went blank when I opened an application. I had to re-boot more often than with win' 98!) - It seems that some of the files were corrupted when they were de-encrypted and burnt to disk. Also had big problems trying to install .tar files into puppy.
Ended up downloading everything again on the linux machine and then starting over from scratch. This time, everything worked fine and puppy is as stable as a rock.
I had had doubts about using the "safebooted" laptop and I think this confirms it - one to avoid for future downloads!
One (other) thing puzzles me though - Looking around the forums, I get the impression that puppy linux is not a favored distro' by many people. Being a "newbie" and puppy being my first taste of linux, I'm not yet in a position to decide either way of course but I'm now thinking that maybe SuSE would have been a better choice for my ancient desktop. Will certainly have a look at Debian also.
Anyway, having fun and learning all the way - again, thanks for the welcome. I shall definitely be visiting these pages a lot - starting with the excellent tutorials. The bug has bitten! Must remember to go out of the house once in a while...
