Hello from the Fox River Valley

I live 40 miles west of Chicago in Batavia, home of Fermi National Laboratory. I am a software architect/engineer with over 25 years experience in the development of frameworks and applications for large-scale, distributed manufacturing systems. I am currently working as an independent IT consultant and my personal workstation is a custom system with Intel S5000XVN motherboard, dual Intel E5450 quad-core processors, and 8GB of ECC RAM. I am running CentOS (currently 5.3) on this system and I run WIndows XP and Solaris x86 in VirtualBox VMs. On my laptop I run both XP and Ubuntu 8.10.

    a newbie again

    Hi lads,

I'm from Ireland close to Cork city. My skill is electronics technician and I was as computer technician (or engineer?) almost 6 years long but that was a bit long time ago (in 90's). My favourite past time is photography. For this reason I can't to left the MS also I must to have a "Longhorn" for my prof. Adobe CS4 programs: Photoshop-Illustrator-InDesign.
I'd like to get answer my decide at the moment. Which SuSe is better and why. Actually my choices are: SLED 10 and OpenSuse 11.

I've used SLED 10 in the past, but not OpenSuse, so while I can say that I much prefer CentOS (RHEL) over SLED (I use CentOS on my workstation), I cannot say whether OpenSuse would be preferable of the two SuSe distributions. In any case, the principal differences would be one of stability vs. current, paid support vs. community support. You can look at SLED vs. OpenSuse like you can look at RHEL vs. Fedora. The pros and cons are very similar. In any case, they are all quality distributions and you should be able to configure a reliable system from any of them.

G'day!! My first post ever in any forum. I'm from subtropical Brisbane, Australia. We too have an airport, possibly as good as Dayton's.

I'm probably classed as a boring old fart, aged 57 years, and have been messing around with Linux for 10 years or so, just as a hobby. I love pain!!...

I have tried most distros and have always found at least one problem with each, usually about getting my printer Canon iP1000 to work. Now, have happily settled on Ubuntu, which seems very good indeed (though I still can't get the printer to work!!) I hope to chat with other Linux tragics and help if I can.

    Welcome, and please stay awhile.
You will not be alone in the age department, we have several old farts around here and they all come in different flavors.

Thanks, glad that my message got through to someone. (It's really was my first attempt at this forum caper). Now I have to work out how to add a tasteful illustration to my posts. (FYI, "mudgecko" is Australian slang for saltwater crocodiles-- the nasty 4-metre variety that munch on careless swimmers, cattle etc)!! They are my Household Gods, along with Homer Simpson.

I hope to contribute something useful if required, else I'll just "drink beer and tell lies".

Glad to learn that there are some other wise "elders" meddling in the Dark Arts of Linux.
