Thanks XTremo, I've not tried Mepis lately, not for at least a year, so I'll give the latest one a whack next time I see it on one of the local PC mags. Still I've had no problems at all with Ubuntu 8.10, and one hesitates to change a good horse for an uncertain one... until then, I'll have a shufti at their website etc and especially the Mepis community forum as you recommend.

Well that's the great thing about Linux.....so much choice. Ubuntu is a superb distro.......but it just didn't do it for me as I prefer the KDE environment.
Yes, I know Kubuntu is available but I just prefer a native KDE distro.....hence I always gravitate towards Mepis, Mandriva, and Suse.

Kubuntu is also a native KDE distro. You will not find any trace of Gnome or any other DE/WM in Kubuntu.
Same is with Mandriva and SuSe. Both have option to install any or both DEs.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

Agreed casper.....but as far as I'm aware Mandriva and Suse are primarily KDE with a Gnome option, whereas Kubuntu is Ubuntu packed with KDE. Not that there's anything wrong with that of course.
As far as the Ubuntu's go....they're great distros and have a huge following. But I never gelled with them myself. Not their fault......it's solely down to personal taste.

I like the "underdogs" out there.....and I'm about to try out Zenwalk 6. I used Zenwalk 5 for a while and was very impressed with it. Good community too.
