Smile just saying hi

hello everyone. just wanted to say hi.
I'm new not just to this forum but to forums in general. never been very good conversing online but since i have just started trying to learn linux it looks like it might be a good idea to give forums a better chance.
I built a new pc for my son and since I've been wanting to learn linux I decided to use his old computer and give it a try. I'm now using freespire but truth be told i still don't have a clue. I find myself running around in circles most of the time. any advice on learning sites or good books would be very helpful. http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/ima...s/confused.gif
PS why can't i watch the olympics on nbc.com ?

Howdy from Texas. What computer specs are you running and did you know you posted this twice.I don;t use Feespire. So can't help you with that. I asked for your specs cuz maybe you could try out a better distro (only my opinion, disregard if I'm talking out of line), like Ubuntu which is pretty user friendly. Enjoy the forum.

Yah i did know that i posted twice. not sure how but i did.
anyways, i'm running an old hp with a 1.7 gig processor and 640 mb of ram.
Umbutu was the first distro i tried to load but had no luck getting it to work.
I'm so new to this that i'm not married to any distro at the moment. thanks for taking the time to say hello. by the way, I'm originally from Ok. that's where i was raised so we used to be neighbors. I live with the hillbillys in Virginia now.

Maybe you had a corrupt download on Ubuntu. I've been able to load it with those specs. If you decide to try burning it again use the md5sum checker for windows on your boys computer. You can Get it here: MD5 GUI for Windows

You need to do a md5sum check of any linux distro you choose to use to make sure the files are intact. In linux like Freespire do you have Braserio disk burning? That has the capabilty to burn iso files off cd burner. To do a md5sum check in linux first download the iso to your desktop. Then open your terminal and type cd ~/Desktop then hit enter then type this md5sum <Name of file> and you should get a long string of numbers and letters that match the md5sum from where you downloaded iso. Hope this helps. You are probably gonna hafta post a seperate thread about your Olympics issue. State which Firefox or Whatever browser comes with Freespire and what Media player opens when you click on a utube video for starters. By the way I went to NBC's site and clicked on their video play for one of the events and it stated I needed a flash plugin installed for viewing the video and when I clicked to see what flash plugin they wanted me to install< I found that I already have it and it works for all other streaming video and music so the problem might be with NBC's site.

LIL Brother lives in Midwest city OK. Don't have any kin in Virginia though.

Hi, claytonrkl! Welcome to LinuxForums!

I noticed that rokytnji already gave you a link to the Linspire Forums, but just so you know, there is also a section here on the Forums that may give you some help there.
Just remember, Linux is a different type of beast than Windows. If you keep that in mind, I think you'll have a good time with it.

See you around the Forums!
