Spread Linux

I would like to make a suggestion. Whould it not be good to make a web site Spread Linux? I think spread firefox had a huge success. The only thing that Linux doesn't have is marketing and a site like spread firefox could fill the gap pretty well. Linux users of all distros should be able to make their presence visible (a common total Linux Users perhaps?like download count for firefox).Or organize download and installation days-or anything else that gets publicity, i think you get the picture.
If it proves successful the big players like Google, Dell, Asus, Red Hat, Novel (sorry for those not mentioned, i can't remember every company that has helped Linux) could probably donate money to the project and Linux may finally get real advertising, like advertisments in big computer magazines and sites or newspapers, etc.
It would be a shame to lose the great opportunity that Vista gave Linux to increase its market share.

Which are those? I have never read about them in any site or forum. When i googled it, i found only Spread Linux , which doesn't do anything, only has a mail address. Do you know when will it work?

You mean a site just to spread the word and give a good chance to download it? Some good ones are:
DistroWatch
Linux.com
The LiveCD List
And let's not forget our own easy access portal, the LinuxForums Download Directory

...just to name a few.

In fact, if you Google 'Linux Downloads', that last one is, ironically, the first one

Ditrowatch is great, but it is more a place to find out about all distributions. It does not count total Linux downloads, does it? I was talking about advertising. I believe that Spreadfirefox is years ahead when we talk about marketing.

Linux is lurking in the dark, biding it's time...

...is it time yet, to come out into the light and conqueror the world??

Hmmmmm

I dunno, I dunno, I dunno

I sympathize with your idea. I wouldn't want to discard it categorically. But marketing is highly complex. Just ask a randomly chosen audience which is better: Slackware or Ubutnu.... and you will not get a definitive answer. What you do get is several conflicting definitions of 'better'.

So the question really is, what target audience do you have in mind?

Apropos I really like this commercial

I think that it is not a bad idea, but it has the problem that Linux is not a single product. If you are going to spread Linux, which one?

I like this commercial

Funny that they are both Red Hat...

I would like to design a template (clone which distro?) for this purpose. Pasting stickers is a better idea.

Such commercials are exactly what i am talking about!YouTube - Red Hat Linux 3
But have you seen it in a TV Station like CNN?? It needs a lot of money to do this, so you need the big players to invest in marketing. Firefox got a full page or 2 in TIMES magazine! Don't tell me it did not help at the early days of firefox.
