Hi, welcome to the forums. This forums are one of the best places to get help.
Do you use Linux already(and which distribution) or are you planning to use?
If you want opinions about which distribution to use, tell us your hardware specification and what will you use your computer for(example:internet, multimedia, office applications, games, make a web site, etc)

If your pc is P4,Athlon Xp or newer and has more than 512MB of RAM, i suggest you try Ubuntu as it is very easy for new users. If you have an old pc, than try puppy Linux Home Page | Puppy Linux It is not as easy as Ubuntu but it is super fast.
For prgramming there are tons of tools. Some are eclipse, netbeans, kdevelop, anjuta, bluefish. There are tools for every programming language, but i am not a programmer and i don't know all of them.

Hi there Priyanka.Golatkar, and welcome to Linux!
I agree with kostasan on most points. However, Puppy Linux might be a bit overkill! I think Puppy, DSL and stuff like that is only really necessary if you have less than 128MB Ram; between 128Mb and, say, 512MB, you could consider Xubuntu or Zenwalk. In any case, it's generally a good idea to flirt for a while, trying different distros until you find something that suits you.Distribution: Archlinux
Processor: 3 x Amd 64 bit
Ram: 4 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT

Well, if you want certification in linux, use fedora 8 or 9 as its similer to RHEL5..
If you want to use linux as a desktop user, use Ubuntu/OpenSUSE..
what kind of applications you want to use on your computer?

No one can tell you what you should use. I said before you need to flirt and I repeat it. An average install takes around one hour, and it' all free. So go ahead! Flirt! Here is a list of my ex-distros, you'll see what I mean:
Ubuntu
Mandriva
Suse
Fedora
Damn Small Linux
Puppy Linux
Mepis
Slackware
Debian
Gentoo
Yoper
and now...Archlinux.
Some of these I only stayed with a few days, some a few months, but each time I try something else I edge just that bit closer to understanding what I want. I now know that I appreciate speed above prettiness, which is why I hate slow, slow Suse but love Archlinux. You have to do the same - so off you go: burn a CD and have fun!Distribution: Archlinux
Processor: 3 x Amd 64 bit
Ram: 4 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce 9800 GT

Hello priyanka,
its all depend on what you want to learn, Is it like install new OS and play with it is a different thing and use if to learn something is different thing. If you are willing to learn it then you pick up any good distro which is good as desktop as well as server like redhat and suse.
please let us know your purpose behind it, so will provide you good sites as well as documentation
