IBM Lotus Symphony

I'm probably going to download and play with it just to see what it's like. It's IBM's augmented and re-branded version of OpenOffice. Supposedly (based on a couple of blog reports I've read) it handles some Microsoft Office documents better than vanilla OpenOffice. It has a slightly different interface as well.

People I've known here at work tend to say that Lotus Notes (the IBM email suite) is the bane of their existence, so I'm not sure if tacking on "Lotus" to the name was such a good idea, but perhaps it will help their image if Symphony doesn't suck.

I am downloading to try. Supported Linux was Red Hat and Suse so I hope it installs in Ubuntu.


ps god the installer is slow I had to install one Library for the installer to kick off LibstdC++ 5

installer makes it seem like all you need is around 500 mb and then when you click install the space requirements jump to 900. This is a problem for where I am installing it because its on a VMWare Bubble which only has 5 gb allocated.

its installing now had to reinstall ubuntu in my bubble.

got it installed finally a bit slow in a bubble but is nice though. I like that its all in one MDI no matter what kind of document.

the funny part is that this is in no way related to the good old fashioned lotus suits there were popular in the DOS era.

Specially the right side panel seems like MS 2007 Office System

Came across a problem, I cannot load from the menu I have to drill down and sudo to run it. which is odd because It has execute on root user and group.

IBM and the community took a new direction with Symphony, and I like interface. I feel like OpenOffice has some worthy competition despite being related. techieMoe I hope you give us a review.
