There's very little I have encryped... I think the only encrypted connections I have is when I'm torrenting.

You're going to a college, not some enviroment where you have access to classified information you're responsible for and need to keep safe... I'd say don't worry. Most of the information that needs encryption like online banking are encrypted by default and if you're worried that people are going to read your IM conversations or whatever, don't worry so much.. And even if your computer gets stolen, I'm sure you have your school work on a USB key chain, and that you were smart enough not to write down information like credit card numbers and whatnot...
