    Architecture: 32-bit vs 64-bit

Hey guys, I've been wondering about the current ratio of 32-bit users compared to 64-bit users under Linux.

Note that I'm not talking about what you might have run in the past, but more about what you use as your default Linux system. The 64-bit architecture has been around for quite a while now, and it's maturing but are people adopting it?

Please vote and let us know.

    Hello,

a 64Bit CPU is ticking in my system for 3 years now but I still run only 32 bit GNU/Linux.

Every now and then I give 64Bit releases a try and install them for testing. But as I really can't see any difference I don't have a reason to switch.

I run 64 bit on two of my systems (Core2Duo Laptop and Core2Quad Desktop) because my desktop has 8 GB Ram. For a program to be able to use more than 2 GB of ram at a time (virtual machines) I have to run 64 bit.

Since my laptop is pretty much the same architecture and I use Gentoo, I can compile on my desktop, and just use binaries for my laptop. Works very well here.

I have been using 64 bit for about 3 years on my computers, and it has come a LONG way. If there are any 32 bit programs I need, they compile fine and I can run them no problem because Gentoo sets up a nice multilib profile.

I think the switch to 64 bit is coming, and I have just taken the early steps to get ready.

I have had problems with 64 bit and compatibility in the past and none of my computers have enough memory that I must switch to take advantage.

    So I don't..

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

    I run 32-bit. I want to run 64-bit but I don't have a reason to as I have 2GB of RAM.

I have had trouble with 64-bit in the past but the last few attempts worked pretty well. I may go 64-bit next time but it'll be a matter of preference rather than any real benefit. I find no performance gain in running 64-bit. Or rather no perceived gain, which might be an important distinction.

When the bulk of my favored and "must-have" apps are supported, then I'll consider giving 64-bit a shot at my desktop.

I tried it once for a couple of weeks, and was cured of my blind optimism. Now if I were looking for a server os, or something to run multiple vm's on, I might feel differently.

32-bit. I haven't really seen a reason to try 64 yet. But I'm hoping to be getting a new machine at some point in the near future... then we'll see where it takes me

    Thanks for voting, guys!

So far, I'm a bit surprised by the votes because I thought that this far into the 64-bit game it would be more near to a 50/50 split. Of course, there aren't all that many votes, yet.

32 bit! I can't afford a new machine right now: and with my house renovations and the economic situation set to get worse and worse, I think it'll be a while before I get one!
