Never going to be "the Peoples OS"

Sorry guys, but Linux is never going to be one for the masses, the "average Joe's" OS. Clever, interesting, and some distros are absolutely beautiful with all the fine art work, but every one has a difficult time getting all the software to work properly, particularly the the hardware. Oh, maybe after endless forum searches and the umpteenth try at locating and editing countless mysterious, and secretly hidden config flies, then... maybe. But who needs that frustration... If you truly want to lead the way, make something work "completely and absolutely" before you move on to the next build. Build a solid foundation first. From where I'm standing It seems you're to busy chasing MS Windows cursing them, and yelling "we can do that...and better"!

from a reluctant, but hopeful fan

Ah, the week wouldn't be complete without the mandatory 'GNU/Linux will never be mainstream...' wisdom from another disenchanted "power user".

*sigh* Must we endure this, yet again?! Surely we could post a banner or something that proclaims "Please allow your staggering insights, re: 'Linux vs. Windows' to fester for a month before posting." Something... anything, to keep flotsam like this from cluttering up the board.

For the record... most of us don't care. I personally hope linux doesn't catch on with the masses. They would just come in and muck everything up. Hell, I can barely tolerate my own level of incompetence, let alone that of 100 million windows users.

Don't be such a snob! I adore Linux but it does take a certain kind of temperament to really appreciate it. You don't have to be a geek or to be good with hardware but you do need a logical mind and an interest in learning new things. Most people just want something that "works" and there's nothing wrong with that. Like Techie Moe always says, the best OS is the one that works best for you and that might well be Windows.

Agreed... this has all been covered plenty of times in the past, so locking.
