    Amazed by Linux again...twice

I just built a new PC with my Dad. It's to replace his old Celeron 2.8GHz which has never been much use.

So off I went and built it, and expected a full new reinstall of Linux. Now I know that Linux is less fussy when switching hardware but this changed from
    • An intel chipset to an nvidia one
    • from an nVidia 6200 to an 8600 - which I thought needed a newer driver
    • new ACPI
    • From a P4 era celeron to a Core 2 Quad
I wasn't surprised when Windows bluescreened on him and needed to be repaired and flooded with drivers for everything but what really suprised me is not just that I got by or was able to repair the system - it didn't even blink. Not a warning, error or fail to be seen. It just ignored the changes and trojaned on.

The second thing was, to celebrate the new build we figured we'd move an external drive to inside the case. I took the enclosure apart and removed the SATA disk inside it and proceeded to plug it in. Thing is after I booted I noticed that It had taken over as /dev/sda. How stupid could I have been?! Oh wait - not too stupid because I'm looking at this from within Linux. It survived having all of the disk devices changed thanks to the UUID based mounting in /etc/fstab.

I'm even more impressed now than I've ever been. BRILLIANT
