Mr. Sheldon Richman, the editor of f.e.e., sent me a reply asking what I found wrong with cuil. I told him to go to the website and search " linux xpistub library " and he will see just why I feel his website's email list is prostituting itself with a link to cuil.

Evidently, someone told Mr. Richman this " new and improved " search engine was better than google; and Mr. Richman swallowed that story, without ever trying the search engine himself.

The porno stuff was bad enough; but I went Totally Livid at the website trying to force a scan and software download into my computer.

I have never seen the "Finn MacCool" in Celtic folklore spelled like that. Ever.

I'm sure BigTomRodney, being an Irish speaker, will be able to give the non-anglicised spelling of the giant's name, but I bet it won't be McCuill.

(BTW: I'm from Northern Ireland and have visited the Giant's Causeway several times. This is a volcanic structure that, as the myth would have it, was built by Finn MacCool as a bridge to get to Scotland to fight a rival giant.)

Giants fighting giants? Something must of been wrong with the Guinness when they wrote that!

Yeah, at one stage in the myth (unless I'm confusing my folk tales), Finn tried to throw a fistful of earth at the Scottish giant but missed and landed in the Irish Sea. The gouge in the he left in the earth is Lough Neagh in N.Ireland, and the clump that landed in the sea is the Isle of Man!

Cute stories!

Hmmm -- from a complaint about a search engine..... I think I've driven this thread far enough off topic. Apologies to cousinlucky

I received an email from Mr. Sheldon Richman the Editor at the Foundation for Economic Education. Mr. Richman performed a search at cuil for " linux xpistub library " as I had done through the link he had mention in his news article. Mr. Richmond states:

" Do you really think it's reasonable to hold FEE responsible for the sites an independent search engine listed in response to a particular search? ( Have you searched for anything else? ) Cuil is a bona fide searchengine reported on throughout the general and high tech media.

I admit that my use of the cuil search engine has ended. I will never know any more about it than my own limited disgusting experience. I have notified Mr. Richmond that I consider it my " public duty " to advise people, with children in their homes, to block the cuil search engine. I am going to advise my public library to also block the cuil search engine.

I also advised Mr. Richman that I intend to do a parable on my website about my disgusting experience with the cuil search engine brought to me by FEE.

Cousinlucky, I'm really sorry you had such a bad experience with cuil, but I'd be tempted to give it another chance.

Yesterday it was under very high load after being it being reported on Slashdot.org and the BBC. When I tried it I got some very weird results (not as bad as you did though), and, interestingly, I got *different* results if I repeated the same search. This suggests to me that the site was breaking under the load, and that it might be more fair to wait til either their load decreases or they increase their capacity.

There are a couple of things that make me optimistic about cuil. First, I like the magazine style layout, along with the pictures for each search. Secondly, their privacy policy states that they don't use tracking cookies, and they don't record your search data and IP address (as google does). This *really* makes me hope that cuil succeeds.

Only time will tell.

Sorry about your bad experience. I understand if you never want to see that site again.

I wasn't aware of that one. I may give them a second look for that reason alone.

I'm also getting different results from the hits (or lack of them) I had yesterday. I would like to see Cuil provide an option to perform a 'UK only' search though. This is one of Google's selling points for me: I can limit searches to just one country. Essential in my line of work.

You may have already seen this, but it search that is fun. Powered by Microsoft Live search and requiring Flash and sound, it is still worth a go...

Ms. Dewey

cuil doesn't seem to be very accurate yet and it still seems to be serving up porn in unexpected places....
