Warning About Cuil!!
I got an email today from a Libertarian website and an article within it mentioned a new search engine ( cuil dot com ). I clicked the link to check it out and searched for linux xpistub library. Four or five things appeared on my computer screen. I clicked one and was taken to a porno site which I did not appreciate.
I tried another and found my computer being scanned by some supposed anti-virus program. I could not disconnect my external modem so I shut it off.
I am going to email fee and advise them of what happened. Has anybody at LinuxForums ever used this search engine?Last edited by bigtomrodney; 07-28-2008 at 07:39 PM.

I just read about this new search engine on Google News ( 2nd entry in Hot Trends and a lot of other entries related cuil only ). Checking it right now.
It is amazing what you can accomplish if you do not care who gets the credit.

I've tried it and was unimpressed, but maybe it'll get better with time.

I Googled myself and then "Cuiled" myself. The search results in Google were much more relevant than the ones in Cuil. I have to agree with a point brought up by some analysts in this WIRED article, it may not matter how superior Cuil is to Google; Google has pretty much become synonymous with web search. That sort of brand recognition is hard to shake.

On the other hand... if it brings up porn... then it knows when I'm lying.
I want to find drivers for my network card.
*No Dave... I can't do that... because subconciously you want porn*
But I need the network card drivers.
*You will fap to these midgets... it is what you desire*
I will not fa- ok I will...
I'd NEVER be able to get anything done

Hope you don't mind Lucky, I took the initiative to remove the link for the site. Given the nature of the conversation I figured you didn't want them getting an increased ranking among search engines based on your thread
Feel free to revert it if that was your intention though...
They also claim 'cuil' as an Irish word. That I'm doubting very much though I could be proven wrong. I can think of several other meanings other than 'knowledge' though, but even then the grammar is wrong.

I agree that they're having a few problems with weird results, but they're currently being hammered by Slashdot traffic, so I'm gonna wait a while before judging them.
Who knows, maybe this time next year we'll be directing newbs to just****ingcuilit.com

I tried it earlier today having read about it on the BBC website. There is an Anglo-Celtic word to describe what I think about it... It's shite. Hope no-one is offended.
To qualify this I searched for "social housing" and it crashed. I then searched for social housing (minus the quotes). It found nothing. It's also very slow. I would probably use Dogpile in preference to it.I am always doing that which I can not do, in order that I may learn how to do it. - Pablo Picasso

Please, tell us more about this, because this is a serious issue here.
What is the distribution you are using? Do you use a custom or
default kernel? What is the name of the browser and which plugins were installed when this happened?
You talked about a modem, so I assume there is no hardware firewall involved?
Which services listen on your system on TCP and UDP sockets?
Don't forget to also give the version numbers of all the things asked for above.
