| Mel alot of what you describe is all stuff you as a linux fan should have done for them before the computer is in their hands. When i have gotten together a PC for one of my family members I install OS update system and add basic packages to make DVD playback possible. When i get to their home I install printer etc if needed. So just installing the OS and saying here you go you are on your own now isn't good enough even it it were XP. Which I would still install OS apply updates and install printer and get dvd playback working. you know out of the box XP doesn't have that either until you install a DVD decryption program in the form of a movie player as well.
