    i.s.p nightmare stories

ok, I'm really satisfied with my current i.s.p, but I would love to get some opions on this thing that happned back in 1995. I had a mac powerbook, and was going to use one of those "free i.s.p discs" that would come in the mail. or be at stores...Well, my powerbook would not connect, so i called customer support, the guy told me to leave my computer connected and he r:login to it, I sat and watched things move around on the moniter, then to my horror, some of my software started to vanish. the guy said ok. your account is o.k, but you had some illegal software, that I had to remove. the software he was talking about was a " paid for version of quark express" I don't know why this guy thougt it was illegal or why he was playing god, but it was shocking, and it happend to my sister years later also. is this normal for an i.s.p to do such things ?

    Haha, nice

I honestly do not know if this is "normal", but I have always been wondering why on earth one would grant a stranger access to one's computer.
Call it a lesson learned and let us fold our hands to praise the fact that an operating system like GNU/Linux exists that gives the power over the machines to the users, not companies.

Personally, I would have went off on them in a BIG way! I'm not sure how it was back then, but I do know that it's definitely not common practice nowadays for an ISP to remote access a customers PC for any reason.

i haven't had anything like that happen. Granted, I was 5 at that time, but the companies my family has used talked us through the process if it was a software issue. Also, why would "illegal" software have to be removed? he probably was just playing god.
