I'm just having this "give 'em a fair trial, then hang 'em" kind of feeling.

Is the installer finished yet??

TechieMoe tries Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate

Well, there it is. Long story short, I got my money back.

I haven't used Vista enough to really come to a fair judgment on it but I will say that I think they changed some things just for the sake of changing them, and not because they improved the OS or user experience in any way. Desktop settings for example, which was pretty simple in XP, is much more difficult to navigate in Vista.

Nice rant Moe. You did seem to give it a fair go but I can see why you were frustrated. You certainly did take one for the team because you've spared me the curiosity of trying it again.

Two things that did stand out though in the review; UAC and RAM. The UAC prompt when you were entering control panel and doing your system updates is much the same as doing the equivalent actions in Ubuntu right? You need to approve any updates you do through update manager, so I was a little suprised by your reaction to this. The other bit was RAM. I believe that Microsoft have moved to a new memory management system more similar to our own Unix/Linux model. That is use what you have until you need it, the usual caching thing. Could that have been the large RAM usage or do you think in this case it was just overuse by Vista?

Don't get me wrong I'm no Microsoft fan, just trying to get a fair measure.

The difference is that the only thing I need to "approve" in Ubuntu is adding and removing software, and I only have to do it once when I launch the program. UAC was asking me to approve every action I took and every dialog that popped up.

That is definitely a possibility. If I run into articles describing that I'll update the rant. However, even with that as a consideration Vista offers no significant improvements over XP for me, and a heck of a lot more headaches.

I understand. If I get something factually incorrect, I'm usually good about fixing it. I'm sure the response emails will come rolling in pretty soon and I'll get at least one person who brings up the RAM issue.

Memory aside, I'm still shocked at the 33GB of my harddrive that was taken up for what looked like a basic install. Or did Microsoft start reporting harddrive usage as a cache as well?

hooray quippy commentary for everyone

on a serious note people here in our it departments tried it and hated it. there is a part in the license that gives you a xp license so people are using that to downgrade to xp.
