    Noob alert

    Hiya,
new to the site. Havent used Unix since 86 (on a pdp11 vax system). jack of paying money for Windows OS (and unimpressed by decades of supporting the crap, did like the money bit...)

Recently installed Fedora on a p4 2.8Ghz system and was very impressed by the easy of use and install. Now I want to know a bit more about Linux and in particular would like to compile and install an optimised os on my hardware.

    Thanks for the site.
    Cheers from Australia

    Welcome to LinuxForums!

I'm pretty happy with Fedora, but like you I wanted more. So I been chewing my way through an install of CRUX 2.4.

    See you around!

    Hi!
If you want to compile an OS, then Gentoo is for you! But it ain't easy - and to be honest I think it's more trouble than it's worth. Archlinux is considerably simpler, and you won't see much, if any, performance difference.
    Good luck!

Oh God! You want to compile your own OS! I think you may be jumping in at the deep end a bit - perhaps you should get used to Linux first! But you know yourself better than I do so here are two links. This is a link to the Linux from Scratch website. And here is the Gentoo handbook. Gentoo has some of the best documentation there is, and the forum is very supportive.

Most Linux users will give a newbie a hearty welcome. That's one of the things that differentiates Linux from Windows - Linux only survives through volunteers helping out newbies. There is no official helpline - only us.

I disagree here. There are enough business backed distributions with support included. Of course you have to pay for it but somehow I doubt this is different on the Windows side

That's very true; but as an individual, I can't get official support from Canonical for my (x)Ubuntu install. As a windows user, I can get official support from Microsoft.

As a Linux user I have to rely on the Interweb and in particular forums like LFO so I thank my lucky stars that they are mostly filled with friendly and knowledgeable enthusiasts.

This is not a criticism of the Linux distributors; I would rather have the choice.

My new blog. It's probably not as good as I think it is.

    Ok, didn't know Ubuntu.

I grew up with SuSe, where a support sticker came flying out of the box after I had opened it. It entitled me to a certain amount of time in which I could nag the hotline with my "Where's the music player?" questions. So I assumed other major distros are similar.
