Hi Just joined

I have an Acer 5720 and cant get the wireless or sound to work under Ubuntu 8.04.
The other issue I have is trying to install Java on the machine. I know Ubuntu 8.04 comes with Java but when I try to install it. I get a message saying that it conflicts with another program and to use the synaptic manager to remove the offending program. I have no idea which program to remove. Any help in resolving these issues would be greatly appreciated.

I enjoy Linux and cant stand Vista. It is nice to be part of a larger linux group.

All the Best

John

1.Open a terminal and type
Code:
sudo apt-get clean all
sudo apt-get install -f
This should clean the conflict.
2.Then type the following to update every program in your system.
Code:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
3.To install Java type
Code:
sudo apt-get install sun-java6-bin
You can perform step 2 from the update manager and 3 from synaptic if you don't like command line. i They are in System->Administration. To find java in synaptic use the search bar it has.

For the wireless go to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers and let it install the drivers it tells you. You need to be connected to internet with a network cable to do this.

Also, you should post your problems to the Ubuntu forum, not the coffee lounge.

tried to install Java

i tried your suggestion. I am now getting synaptic error. need to run dpkg configure a . When i tried to run that i said I needed superuser priviliges. Also a cache error underneath it. Any suggestions. Well I fixed the synaptic error.

I tried to install Java runtime 6 per your instructions and everything seemed to work perfectly. I got the Java Blue Screen and it asked me to ok the license agreement. I could not find a way to depress the <ok> button to get it to proceed. the screen was frozen. any help would be appreciated-thanks. Should this just install on its own or do I have to press the ok button.
