Hello! New to Linux, but not *nix
Hi everyone.
I've just joined up as I'm in the process of making the switch from FreeBSD to Mandriva. I've used FreeBSD for 13 years now and used to work with Suns for many years in my paid job so I'm not a newbie to *nix but I am to Linux so need to learn the Linux way of doing things.
You will be pleased to know that I junked Windows completely about two years ago so I'm a M$-free environment - although I still have to use it at work.
Having a bit of trouble getting Mandriva installed (I've posted a question in the Mandriva forum if anyone fancies helping me out
) but once it's up and running no doubt I'll be around asking some dumb newbie type questions

Welcome to Linuxforums, Parish!

The question begs to be asked; 'why the decision to switch after 13 years?' Or is it just an expansion into linux? After 13 years w/ BSD you must have developed some serious chops.

Well, the OS is fine, it's the application ports/packages that were the problem. It seems that everytime I upgrade a package (I was actually using the ports system - build from source) that either the new version didn't work, or crashed, or that something else broke. Plus there doesn't seem to be as much help/support around as there used to be - the mailing lists are getting quieter - and since I junked Windoze I need reliablility. The last problem, that has finally made me make the the switch, was that I installed a load of updated Xorg drivers and the wheel on my mouse stopped working (I never realized how much I used it until it stopped working). Before that, I u.g digikam from 0.9.2->0.9.3 and it stopped working with my camera - took 6 months before someone came up with a hack to the USB libraries to workaround that.
I've looked at Linux several times in the past but have ended up staying with FreeBSD as I could never decide which Linux Distro to use.
Having said that, I've got problems with the Mandriva packages before I've even got it installed
