Hurricane Ike
For those of us in the southern US, the end of the summer marks the beginning of hurricane season. This basically means a stoppage of any and all real news reports in favor of round-the-clock scaremongering by our local newsboys.
The last storm that came our way, Gustav, did no damage whatsoever to Houston as far as I know. This next one, Ike, is supposed to hit us head-on. I'll be very surprised if it does.
I guess after the total disaster (and not in a natural sense) of Katrina I'm a little skeptical about these kinds of things. The worst damage my side of town got in Katrina was a few downed lawn chairs and some lost power. I don't expect Ike to be any worse.
At any rate, if I'm boating around town this weekend I'll try and find some working internet and let you all know I was wrong. As it is, I'm hunkering down and getting ready for a lot of sensationalist news stories, some wind and rain, and perhaps a conniption fit from my mother (who's a bit of a weather hypochondriac). Wish me luck.Registered Linux user #270181

what cracks me up is how they have those news reporters who are warning people to evacuate are standing in the storm to show the winds. we are going to get a lot of this rain as well. I have family and friends in florida that are always going through these storms. unless people live in an area not prepared for it they usually aren't that bad anymore.

Living in England is so boring. It rained at lunch time but it's stopped now.

Best of luck to you, techieMoe.
The storm is coming my way too, but not before it gets past you. I'm only expecting some high winds and perhaps some soaking rain (which we need anyway).
Do let us know how you weather the storm.oz

hah... I needed fuel just a few minutes ago, so I went to the local gasoline pumps and found huge lines there. Some of the other customers said that they had been called by various people saying that fuel was about to go up by $1.50 per gallon within the next hour.
Don't know if that's true, or not, but my gage is showing full now, and I'm out of the long lines.

Ever notice how when they cover a hurricane they always have to have a reporter on the waterfront with the camera lens dribbling with rain to make the shot more dramatic? These people make a living off of other people's misery. This is why I never watch television news anymore. I'd rather compile a new kernel...

Yep, I agree and generally get all my news off the web these days. That way, I can read just what I want to know about, and skip all the rest.
I'm really tired of everyone on television shoving their opinions and products down our throats. It's rather interesting that I have satellite TV with over 400 channels and I now watch less TV than ever.

I am glad I don't have to worry about hurricanes here. We get rain from them, but that is about it.
We just have to dodge the pesky tornados that seem to increase in number every year.
I also have satellite, and if it weren't for the dvr, I would get no use out of it. My news comes off the net as well.
Good luck Moe, and try not to get too wet.

When I was in kindergarden my wise grandfater gave me a speech that boiled down to:
" You can't do anything about the weather and you can't do anything about what people think ". If it's cold-dress warm. If it's hot - do not wear dark clothing. etc. etc.Linux registered user # 414321
