Do you think Linux is the future? If you do? Why?
I am a Windows user, thinking of going to linux. I want a fast system. But I'll still need to use Windows Apps and Macromdia Apps as well. Not to mention World of Warcraft! So If I can run any of these on linux - tell me. Buf if you think linux is the future OS.I want to know why you think it is the future in every aspect you can think.
Also when I say future OS I am pretty sure I mean any Linux (freebsd) based OS.

Welcome to the forums!
I don't think most Linux users care whether or not it's the future, at least I know that I don't.
It would be nice if Linux continues to be an option for those that don't want to run Windows, though.
If you should desire to do so, you can dual-boot between Linux and Windows to make sure you can run any programs that you must have. Otherwise, look at the possibility of running them under WINE if you want to use Linux only.
Best of luck with Linux.oz

Future Smutcher, I sure liked it when Harley Davidsons had a reputation of leaking oil, breaking down, and required some basic knowledge to keep one on the road. Parts and Bikes were cheap then, and anybody that wanted the numbing thorazin shuffle lifestyle could buy a jap or brit bike and all was well with the world.
Now, Harleys are wanted by everyone and 20,000.00 motorcycles are what we got to show for it. Tires that used to sell for 10 to 20 dollars are now 250.00 to 300.00.
I hope Linux doesn't go the way the motorcycle industry has gone.Linux Registered User # 475019

- 09-12-2008 #4It is a simple matter of evolution. Dinosaurs once ruled for a lot of time, but they did not evolve and as a natural result, they became extinct.I want to know why you think it is the future
The same thing happens in this case. Windows evolve slowly(it took 4 years to make vista)
while Linux gets better at a frantic pace.
Linux also adapts better according to its use. It can run on a cellphone, a netbook/laptop/desktop, a Super Computer (CERN) or NASA's Mars Phoenix Lander. On the other hand windows versions for the above have different kernels(windows xp, windows mobile, windows server)

Some macromedia apps will run under wine on linux. WoW runs as well. Check the wine database:
Wine AppDB - Wine Application Database
The future is a different thing for each person. My future is different from yours, and ours is different of the future of any other person. The last years, linux has become more famous, and that can only grow with the time. Whether it will be a mainstream OS in the next years, I can't say for sure. All I know is that it will become more famous with the time.Buf if you think linux is the future OS.I want to know why you think it is the future in every aspect you can think.
FreeBSD has nothing to do with linux. It uses a different kernel and toolchain. Is a completely different OS, and is more close to UNIX than Linux. Also when I say future OS I am pretty sure I mean any Linux (freebsd) based OS.

Look for applications that run natively on the OS you are wanting to use. Many Windows applications have suitable Linux alternatives but if you really need particular Windows applications then a dual boot is likely to be your best solution. Ozar has provided options in post #2.
For me ... having the option to run Linux is important. I hope it will continue to be available in future.
If Linux had been developed and shipped with most PCs I doubt Windows would receive any support ... so I think it is a better operating system. Should the dominant position of Windows be lost for example as a result of a particularly poor product
adverse public reaction to a particular policy or service etc then it is very unlikely the position will be regained by Windows.
Use the OS(s) which do what you require ... if Linux features in this then fine, if it does not thats fine as well
having the option available is good
