oddly enough, everybody that told me about the hardware issue didn't own a dell. i've decided that my laptop will be a dell, now it's a matter of which model, and with or without ubuntu preinstalled. i just looked up the Inspiron 1525. the Windows version has slightly better hardware, and Windows (obviously), for $50 more. The 1525n (the ubuntu version), looks pretty good for what it is, though. i might get the windows 1525 to dual-boot, but i'll see when the time comes. it'd be interesting to see how it plays out.

i thought about leaving windows entirely, but realized i still like some of the games, and wine isn't perfect. i'll more than likely use ubuntu for higher-requirement open-source software, and windows for games and some file conversion i can't do in linux.
