    Syllable

Hello! I take part in the Syllable project.
Syllable Desktop is not Linux (and it is not unix-like OS), it's written from scratch, and base on own System architecture.
I'm not developer, I'm support engineer in project. Our team is very small, actually on system work only 5 man. For regret many people think that we are "yet another Linux distrib", but they are wrong. Also there is problem - too little people heard about Syllable
I didn't translate yet my about page, i really think that it's better than official, but you can read my FAQ http://syllable.org.ru/static/faq_eng.html and look screenshots on About page.

Official site is Syllable - News

Soon Syllable 0.6.6 will be release. If anyone have blogs or news site, please help project -- make publications about Syllable!

I was reading a review in Linux Format of Syllable and various other truly alternative operating systems.

Even though Syllable was judged more complete, it came second to Haiku as Haiku was judged to be developing faster. If you only have 5 people developing it no wonder it is slightly slow.

How would it play with virtual box? I think I may download it and find out

[edit]I see it runs on an eeepc. I may also give that a go if I like in the VM[/edit]

    Cool

It's better to use Parallels. VirtualBox still have some issue.

    Yes, haiku community have
    a. fame due to BeOS
    b. many software from Be

But I think it's not good practise to try back to live dead project, time is go and new ideas is come.
For me Syllable is much better, there is some deficiency of software, but I hope in next 2 year Syllable will get most of needles software.
What does user need? I think most time user spend in web surfing, chating in IM, and sometimes working with docs. This minimum is quite achievable in nearest time

Wel, I have tried in qEMU and as you say it is a bit application light, but other than that it is very nice indeed. Unfortunately it wouldn't install on my eee-pc so at the moment I have to classify it as a very interesting toy and move on.

Please don't take that as disparagement; I think what you are doing is remarkable and I will be checking back regularly to keep an eye on progress as it definately has a lot potential.

Oh and on qEMU it is fast

On Qemu without kqemu Syllable work not very fast, it's better to install kqemu.

Also if you want to install Syllable on EeePC you need at last Syllable 0.6.6 which will be soon release.

I've added information about dual Installation Syllable with Xandros on EeePC. Thanks to Flemming for writting this Howto!

I did use 0.6.6 development release for my eeepc (found it on the forum). I had to remove a usb driver from the boot process to even get it to start and then it just stopped for about 1/2 hour when installing locales.

I assumed it failed and gave up.

SyllableDesktop-0.6.6-20080914.i586 (the iso file name). Linked as September 14.

I don't know if it makes a difference but it is an original eeepc
