    how to get a user id and passoword without microsoft

    I would like some help. I installed UBUNTU 7.1. My ISP furnished a motorola dsl modem and CD installation disc. I could not get the browser page. I read in the bible that there are some command line modifications, which I am not sure will work because I can not get a user id and password. I was advised on wine, but since I can not get up on the internet I can not download anything. Any suggestions, or line by line instructions.
