I joined really to find our if anyone knows how to get Three Mobile Broadband working under Linux. Three Mobile supplied me with a Huawei E160G USB modem and I upgraded to SuSe Linux 11 but although it sees the device as ttyUSB0 it fails to connect. What do I need to punch into "knetworkmanager" to enable it to connect? Or perhaps I need to use another distro?

Are your dialup settings correct? The number to dial should be *99#, the authentication is chap. For the username and password, just enter anything. I used kppp and gnome-ppp successfully with my 3 USB modem.

Thanks - I'm now a lot further than before. Kppp does start to connect showing:-

ATZ
OK
ATM1L1
OK
ATDT*99#
CONNECT

but then falls over with the message:-

The pppd daemon died unexpectedly!

Exit status 16

In the man pages 16 = The Link was terminated by the modem hanging up.

Any ideas?

Are you in the dialout (it might be dialup) group? Have you tried running kppp as root (just to see if it will connect as root).

Thanks for your prompt reply. Sorry not to have responded sooner but I've been away and cannot get my mobile broadband working.
As suggested I tried running kppp as root and still get the same error message; the log of the session is as follows:-

I've set up one of these and it works great, but the catch is that you're better off using an early release of NetworkManager 0.7...it has the full configuration dialogue for these devices.

I know the username/password for O2 is gprs/gprs...are you sure there isn't a specific one for 3?

I don't think there is a specific username for 3. I use "user" and "password" and the modem works fine. I have never tried configuring network manager for the USB modem, but kppp and gnome-ppp work fine for me without much tinkering.

Many thanks for all your help and suggestions but I'm still not able to connect, either through Network Manager or through kppp, whether as root or normal user, and I have to send the unit back tomorrow otherwise I will be tied into an 18 month contract. I suppose my next move will be to take my laptop along to somewhere like the Carphone Wharehouse and see if they will allow me to test a known working unit in my machine to prove it will work prior to signing up to a contract.

Ringo, I know how you feel - I just got exactly the same device for my Eee. It refuses to work with the Xandros distro that the system comes with. But...

I put my Fedora 9 SDHC card in, booted up, and logged in to my Gnome desktop. On the network manager I found a new option - "Auto GSM network connection". When I selected the little radio button next to that, Fedora 9 just connected. It just up and did it all. I'd spent all weekend trying to get this bloody thing to do this! One tick on the NM widget and off we go. Once again, I'm utterly staggered by Linux's greatest tool - NetworkManager.

I know you're running SuSE, but NetworkManager cant be that different on there, can it? Maybe try using the Gnome UI for it?

Thanks to all who replied. I've had to send the E160G USB modem back and cancel the Direct Debit. I still wish to get Mobile Broadband working on my Linux Laptop and I'll post in here the details if I'm successful. Meanwhile having upgraded to Suse Linux 11, to try to get the E160G working, I found it incredibly sloooow and "clunky", however, the remedy outlined at the following URL:-

worked like a dream for me; Suse 11 is now working smoothly though not quite a fast as 10.2 IMO.
