Suggestions before going full time :D?
Hey guys, here is the deal. I hate windows! and I'm sick of it. I've been running ubuntu here and there on my laptop (dual booting with XP). I'm considering going full time linux on my desktop at home. My question is, how tough is the learning curve. Where did you all learn everything you know? So this way when I need to troubleshoot something, It shouldn't be tough
.
Also, I really only play 2 games that I found articles on how to install, so I'm assumming the should work. Counter-Strike Source (Steam) and World of Warcraft. Do these games look good, or have good quality?
And last but not least, can you run directx 10
?
Thanks a lot for tips and suggestions about your guys opinions

Hi Andyandhisboard.
I think it would be a difficult undertaking to learn all you need to know in case you have trouble with Ubuntu on your PC but it's certainly a good idea to get familiar with Linux in general. If you are wanting to install Ubuntu, I'd just take on each and every problem you might incur as they happen. No need to learn remedies for problems you might not experience.
I don't play Counter Strike but do play HL and TF. You'll be comforted to know Steam is as aggravating to run under Wine in Linux as it is in Windows.
I don't play WarCraft either but to my understanding it works well with Wine. I DO play StarCraft which runs satisfactorily for me under Wine. You won't need DirectX to run the above games.

i have no problems running either of those games, just make sure you tell them to run with opengl for the best performance and quality, there isn't any advantage to using dx with those games anyway

I can't speak for everyone, but I learned about Linux by using it. I tried out several distributions, broke things, and eventually figured out how to fix them.
If you can get them to work using something like WINE, they should look and behave exactly the same as they do on MS Windows. Also, I really only play 2 games that I found articles on how to install, so I'm assumming the should work. Counter-Strike Source (Steam) and World of Warcraft. Do these games look good, or have good quality?
No. DirectX is a Microsoft proprietary 3D library that only runs on Microsoft operating systems. Projects like WINE emulate some of the functionality of DirectX through custom DLLs.And last but not least, can you run directx 10
?

I don't know anything about games...but as far as just using ubuntu, there was no curve for me, best thing I ever did, I dual booted for months, until my xp just wouldn't boot up anymore, now I wonder why I waited so long...I did have some issus with 7.10 at first I geuss the copy i installed was corrupt, but there has not been one hiccup with 8.4.... I love it. I do still have a windows machine i have to use for video editing unfortunatly, and this 7 year old comp running ubuntu boots faster than my new vista machaine wiith more than double the ram/power...it's actuallly funny to boot both up at the same time.

Hey guys, quick question about Wine if ya don't mind
? I had installed steam flawlessly about a week ago using wine msiexec /i steaminstall.msi... Do I have to use wine still to actually play the game, or is it used just to install it as if it was windows?
Thanks

you still have to use wine to play the game

Also just for a heads up. You know those two games work (I have also read in forums that people have gotten them up) but if you are looking forward to Starcraft 2 whenever it comes out, you might want to wait and keep the dual boot, I'm not positive that will work in Wine. I gave up XP about a year ago but am installing a VM of XP just for one thing really (how stupid to have an OS for one function right?)...mine is for Netflix watch on demand....really annoying but no way around it really
