    Ubuntu Hardy Heron Essentials

I've been using Hardy for about two months. Needs being mainly programming (i'm currently doing electronics engg.) Anjuta sufficed from the Synaptic package manager.

However i want to put in all the essential stuff that a linux-user ought to install. This wil vary from needs to personal choice.
Being pretty new i would really like your opinions and suggestions on what other software i should install.

As a developer, you'll want to install the build-essential meta-package. It pulls down several compilers and libraries you need for development.

I'd also recommend ubuntu-restricted-extras to install support for several multimedia formats like MP3 and Flash.

thanks a lot, techieMoe. incidentally, my audio has been jamming a lot - is there any alternative to uninstalling (from the syn pkg manager) and re-installing the codec?

Is it jamming on any specific kind of file, or just sound in general? What kind of sound hardware do you have?

sorry, i should have mentioned the specifications before. :P
The sound is C-media. CMI9761A (OSS mixer).
i tried to play a beatles discography - meant for windows originally - using wine. the application hung and i used 'top' from the terminal to kill it.
form then onwards there has been no sound.
