The pronunciation of Linux.
I'm sure this has been covered before, but I've never discussed it.
How do the majority of you pronounce it?
I personally say 'Line-ux', not 'Lyn-ux'.
And I've had numerous people correct me, saying it's said 'Lyn-ux'.
However, that doesn't make sense.
The man's name is Linus, like in the Charlie Brown cartoon.
Pronounced-'Line-us', not 'Lyn-us'
So why would it be pronounced 'Lyn-ux'?
So go to it.

I really can't say anything about this that hasn't been said before:

The general consensus on the forums seems to be "either one works."Registered Linux user #270181

I say whatever people around me say. When I lived in Norway, I said Line-ux. Now that I'm living in the US, I say Lin-ux (where "lin" rhymes with "win").
The first makes sence since that's how his name is pronounced. The second makes sense since that's how it's written.

YouTube - Linux Pronunciation
don't mean to call anybody down, but the above video is a good explanation for anybody that is confused by the pronunciation of Linux (it's Linus explaining it). I pronounce it Ly-nux, after fumbling between both of the pronunciations.

Good question. I've often wondered if maybe I had been pronouncing it wrong all these years. But it looks like I haven't.
Now its all cleared up though, thanks to you!
Also, that YouTube link is helpful! Anyone can make a recording of a voice and make up whos it is.Last edited by flipjargendy; 10-14-2008 at 03:39 AM. Reason: after seeing youTube link
